Cadet Corporal John Pritchard from 211 (Newbury) Squadron has recently returned from the Personal Awareness Course run by the Armed Forces Chaplaincy Centre based at Amport House.
Besides supporting the Service Chaplains, the Armed Forces Chaplaincy Centre offers many courses to those who are interested in developing their ability to work with people in the Service and cadet community.
Located just South of Andover, Hampshire, Amport House is in a spectacular setting of parks & gardens and provides a magnificent and peaceful backdrop for the personal awareness course.
The weekend residential course, delivered by an RAF Chaplain, consists of various exercises to allow each individual to learn more about themselves, how they act in certain situations and how they are perceived by others. The cadets were also able to socialise with each other and have informal discussions with directing staff over meals - in the Officer's Mess nonetheless - and communal time.
211 (Newbury) Squadron has a strong history of cadets attending this unique course - cadets always coming back with a better understanding of themselves and more confident in their leadership skills. One of the greatest benefits of the course is that it draws in cadets from across the whole country - and everybody already has things in common, meaning you quickly get to bond and make new friends! This, in turn, leads to sharing of ideas and experiences, which cadets then take back to their own squadrons.
Cadet Corporal John Pritchard said “I really enjoyed the course at Amport House as I learnt a lot about myself. It was excellent meeting and working allongside cadets from all over the UK.”
Flying Officer Alex Pye RAFVR(T) added “The Personal Awareness Course is a fantastic opportunity for cadets - and is very different to the ‘normal’ cadet courses. Cadets come away with a better understanding of themselves and how they are viewed by other people - which, in turn, helps develop their performance both on and off Squadron”
