Newbury & Abingdon Cadets take to the airwaves - Oct 06

On Sunday 1st October, cadets & staff from 211 (Newbury) Squadron & 2121 (Abingdon) Squadron descended upon Coombe Gibbet, Hungerford as part of a Corps wide Radio Competition.

The principle objective was to transmit and receive radio calls for as far as possible. Despite dodging showers, thunderstorms and strong winds, the cadets managed to erect their High Frequency & Very High Frequency aerials and set themselves up for the 4 hour exercise.

During this period the cadets managed to talk to cadets in 1213 (Andover) Squadron, 579 (Llandrindod Wells) Squadron and Head Quarters Air Cadets at the RAF College Cranwell. By the close of the exercise the cadets had sent signals over a cumulative distance of over 400km – the equivalent of Newbury to Newcastle!!

AWO Barker of Abingdon Squadron and AWO Pye of Newbury Squadron jointly managed to event, bring separate experiences & expertise to ensure that the cadets got the very most out of the day – despite the conditions!

The cadets are now looking forward to repeating the exercise in April, hopefully with some new equipment courtesy of a charity bid they have applied for to purchase a HF transceiver!
